Celine Dion’s showstopping ‘live’ performance at
the start of the Paris 2024 Olympics was pre-recorded, it was claimed in France today.
Millions were moved to tears when the 56-year-old Canadian superstar sang Hymne à L’amour (Hymn to Love) in front
of the Eiffel Tower.
It was the culmination of a lavish Opening Ceremony mainly held along the banks of the River Seine
– one that President Emmanuel Macron said was the ’emotional highlight’
of the sporting extravaganza.
But on Friday, the highly respected Liberation newspaper quoted multiple music industry
experts who said the July 26th performance was ‘without a shadow of
a doubt’ pre-recorded.

a sound engineer who asked to remain anonymous said: ‘It was 100% playback,

the incurable stiff-person syndrome.
Hymne à L’amour was chosen because it was originally
sung by the late French music icon Edith Piaf.
Thousands of fans took to social media to praise Ms Dion, whose
greatest hits include ‘My Heart Will Go On’, the theme from the Titanic
movie.

is back and she sounds fantastic’.
It was in 2022 that Ms Dion disclosed that
she had been diagnosed with the neurological disorder stiff-person syndrome which causes muscles to
stiffen and spasm.

a live one, and it has just been released as such on various streaming platforms.
Ms Dion announced on Instagram on Thursday that
the ‘live’ recording was available on sites such as YouTube and

Feb 8 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday missed estimates for fourth quarter profit and forecasts for
2024, with slowing sales of its flagship heated
tobacco product IQOS in particular concerning analysts.
The Marlboro cigarette maker has so far led a transition among
tobacco giants towards smoking alternatives, with IQOS at the core of that effort, consuming the vast majority of over $10 billion PMI
has poured into its transformation since 2008.
It said on Thursday that shipments of heated tobacco units
grew by 6.1% in the fourth quarter, compared with 18% growth in the third quarter.
Philip Morris added that it expected a further hit to
shipments over the coming year as a result of a ban on flavoured heated tobacco in the European Union.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said however IQOS had now surpassed Marlboro in terms of net revenues.
“We are entering 2024 with strong momentum,” he said in a statement.
Any sustained slowdown in IQOS sales was a problem for Philip Morris given its significance
for the business and the company’s premium relative to peers, analysts said.
But Mark Giambrone, a portfolio manager at Barrow Hanley, a sub-adviser to American Beacon’s Large Cap Value Fund which invests in PMI, was
not too concerned.
IQOS is set to test launch in the United States, the world’s largest market for smoking alternatives, this year with a full roll-out later.
“When that happens it will be a boon for the stock and for their earnings base,” Giambrone said.
The company’s shares fell 3%, but recovered to stand around 1.6% lower by 11:20 a.m.

PMI reported fourth-quarter adjusted profit of $1.36 per share.
Analysts had on average had expected a profit of $1.45.
It expects adjusted annual profit of between $6.32
and $6.44 per share, while analysts were expecting $6.60 per share, LSEG data showed.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working
on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following its invasion of
Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette
products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.
It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as well as
related investment of $150 million.
Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh,
this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people.
This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage!

in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And
they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not
even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of
fans of the sequel took to social media after its release
last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office,
good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but
less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic
depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature
of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was
‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be. I love that
the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any
other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’
