Everton’s popularity on the national team is not shocking at all, as they have a long and storied history in the world of English Football. In this article, we will take a look at their early years, and see how they’ve earned their reputation as one of England’s best.

The Early Years

Everton was founded in 1878 by members of a Methodist Church, so they could play a sport all-year round. Eventually, the club grew larger, and got the name Everton, due to the area where they were founded.

Ten years after Everton’s formation they, along with a number of other English football clubs, formed the Football League, and won the first ever League Championship. In the following years, Everton seemed on top of the world, winning two FA Cups, which made them one of England’s most successful teams. Their reign, however, was cut short by the start of the First World War, which interrupted the football program of the time.

The Second Successful Era

Following world war won, Everton saw very few successful periods. They showed promise in the mid-to-late-20s, and in the early 30s won their second FA Cup against Manchester United. However, their second, truly successful period came in the 60s. During this time, Everton won several League Championships, and managed to reach the finals on quite a bit more. In ’66 they won the FA Cup again. This truly was Everton’s Golden Age, as they became the first European team to achieve five consecutive years in Europe’s highest tier competitions.

Everton Today

While Everton is not the most successful club today, historically it has proven to be one of England’s greatest Football clubs, with 5 FA Cups, nine league titles, the record for the highest number of competitions in the top division, and some of the greatest players England’s ever produced. Everton remains one of England’s most important, successful, and beloved football clubs.
