READ: Why Moise Kean Deserves More Everton Chances in 2020-21

It’s been a while since a player divided opinion amongst Everton fans more than Moise Kean.

The 20-year-old arrived for a fee of €27.5 million but only started 6 games for the Blues during his maiden Premier League campaign. A lot of fans were quick to write him off after a slow start, you can look at his odds to score for Everton using the Ladbrokes promo code, and plenty were calling for him to be given another run in the side towards the end of the season after some abysmal performances from the team post-lockdown.

Those supporters, myself included, got our wish on the last day and he duly delivered, scoring once from close range. He could and should have had more, despite another awful performance from the team in a 3-1 loss to Bournemouth.

It’s fair to say not many players have had more of a rollercoaster first season in England than Kean, it took him 22 games to get off the mark for Everton, when he scored in a 2-2 home draw with Newcastle. Who can forget the time he was subbed off 19 minutes after coming on against Manchester United too?

Despite all that, the 20-year-old has shown flashes of what he’s capable of. He’s direct on the ball, his first thought is always how can he create space to get his shot off and he has the physical attributes to scare any defender.

The biggest problem for Kean so far has been consistency. Some games he’s been a non-existent figure, although it must be difficult coming off the bench all the time into a team that creates nothing.

He looked a lot fitter and sharper post-lockdown which is a big plus. You could see in some matches earlier in the season he was really struggling physically with the pace of the league.

If Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is to persist with the 4-4-2 system he has implemented since joining the club, Kean is definitely deserving of a real run in the side. Dominic Calvert-Lewin failed to find the net when the Premier League restarted and did nothing to ensure his place in the side.

There is no doubt in my mind Kean has more upside than Calvert-Lewin and is more than capable of becoming the first player to get 20+ goals in the Premier League for the Blues since Lukaku in the 2016/17 season.

Calvert-Lewin has had three full seasons in the side now and although he had his best scoring season by far (previous best was six) this season, he still lacks that killer instinct in front of goal. Questions do have to be asked whether he is good enough to fire us back into the top six and above.

For a team that finished 12th last season, we have a €27.5 million striker in the squad who has scored goals for Juventus and Italy. It’s about time he got a proper run in the side to if he can fire us back up the table next season.

Otherwise, what’s the point in having him?
